Cupples Station
The history
Tenth to Eleventh at Spruce Street, 1894–1917, Eames & Young for Samuel Cupples and Robert Brookings — a purpose-built freight complex of red granite and brick warehouses served by rail tunnels running beneath the floors, so goods went from boxcar to warehouse without touching the street. It was the most advanced distribution system in America when it was built. Most of the eighteen buildings are gone; the survivors are hotels and offices, and the tunnels are still down there.
